Secrets Revealed!

Where oh where did those shaker doors go?  Well, at first we had to get rid of this pair of closet doors.  They are not that bad, actually.  The Habitat for Humanity was glad to have them.  The problem is that they are the sliding variety, and so you can't get at the full width of the closet.

My father was here to visit last week, so naturally I found a nice task for him and I to do... Demolition!

Often when sliding doors are installed, they are simply hung from the track above, and they butt against finished plaster instead of a door jam.  That was the case here so we had to get rid of the plaster in this area.  This made a tremendous amount of dust.  The plaster and corner bead was cut with an angle grinder.  My father was on hand with a vacuum to catch as much of the flying debris as possible.  The whole area was blocked off with plastic.  Now, we could have just mounted a jam right over the plaster, but that would mean that our doors would have to be cut down way too much.  I expected to cut some off the width, but without removing the plaster we would have lost over 2 inches off each door.  This would ruin the look of the doors.

There!  That looks much better.  There is still some trim work left to be done but that will come after the bookshelves are installed.

As a storage bonus for my wife I installed one of these things.  As it stood it was too tall and not really wide enough so it was modified to...

this... a much more accessible and functional front closet.  Thanks for reading!

  1. Cool looking site Josh!

We had the same idea for our front closet with an Ikea cube, but it didn't come out looking as sleek as yours. It was such a tight fit that Zac had to assemble it inside of the closet! There was a bit of cursing...

It sure is nice to have a place for all of our shoes!
